It should be no surprise to regular visitors to this site that my two favorite writers are Lewis and Tolkien. Not only were they great writers, they were great thinkers, and they had wonderful insights about the place and power of story. As a writer, such treasures are invaluable.
So it is with great enthusiasm that I unveil the second of my three lectures from Lewolkien 2018. This one is all about Lewis and Tolkien on story. It is certainly not an exhaustive treatment on the subject. I am definitely no scholar.
But this talk does represent hopefully at least some wonderful highlights from their own writings on story.
Before we get started, a few notes:
- The original lecture was delivered on March 3rd, 2018.
- It was subsequently re-recorded at my home as the original recording was too poor.
- It references On Fairy Stories by J.R.R. Tolkien and On Stories by C.S. Lewis.
- It’s meant to complement two other lectures, the first of which is The Art of Faith.
If you love Lewis and Tolkien, or just stories in general, I think you’ll enjoy this one.

Well done again! Very enjoyable, and I think you did hit all the important points to hit on this topic.
Thank you sir, I tried to just let Lewis and Tolkien speak for themselves. Glad you enjoyed it.
